How To Prepare & Coat Your Deck
Instructions
Merbau
New Merbau is a beautiful deep red-brown colour that looks fantastic when coated with a good decking oil.
First prepare the surface with Rapid Clean to remove tannins and allow the grain to open up ensuring the coating can adhere.
New Merbau contains tannins (natural oils) that must be removed with a cleaner before any coating will adhere.
Please read How To Prepare & Coat Your Deck instruction sheet for the best results.
Next, coat with a good quality, long lasting decking oil. Dexpress lasts up to 4 times longer than traditional oil
and only requires 2 coats with a 2-hour recoat time and washup in water - easy!
Older/Weathered Merbau can be rejuvinated with Woodcare Wood Cleaner and a stiff brush. For severely weathered timber a repeat application
or stronger solution may give the desired result.
Cypress
New Cypress has an amazing variation in grain colour and knotty features. It
can weather and split fairly quickly so apply a protective oil coating as soon possible.
First prepare the surface with Rapid Clean to remove the mill glaze as cypress is full of resins that will affect the coating adherance.
Remember to check the timber is ready for coating with the water penetration test as described in the
How To Prepare & Coat Your Deck instruction sheet.

Blackbutt
Blackbutt is a cream/pale brown hard-wearing decking material. Being a beautiful light colour it can brighten up any outside area.
First prepare the surface with Rapid Clean to open up the hard grain and prepare the surface of the timber for coating adherance.
Remember to check the timber is ready for coating with the water penetration test as described in the

Next, coat with a good quality, long lasting decking oil such as Dexpress. NOTE: if using a lambswool applicator it is best to immediately follow with a soft
brush to evenly spread the decking oil and prevent streak marks in the light coloured timber.
Spotted Gum
Queensland Spotted Gum varies in colour from pale to dark brown/chocolate and is an extremely tough australian hardwood, therefore correct preparation is essential for coating performance.
Because Spotted Gum is so dense it is preferable to leave it to naturally weather for a few weeks after installation before applying the oil coating.
After weathering, prepare the surface with Rapid Clean to open up the hard grain of the timber for coating adherance.
Important: Check the timber is ready for coating with the water penetration test as described in the
How To Prepare & Coat Your Deck instruction sheet.

and only requires 2 coats with a 2-hour recoat time and washup in water - easy!

well as decks.
First prepare the surface with Rapid Clean to open up the hard grain and prepare the surface of the timber for coating adherance.
Remember to check the timber is ready for coating with the water penetration test.
